| Tree Stewards are volunteers dedicated to improving
the health of trees by providing educational programs, tree planting and
tree care demonstrations and tree maintenance assistance throughout their
communities. Through classroom training and hands-on practice, Tree Stewards
learn the basics of tree biology and physiology, tree identification and

Dear Virginia Tree Stewards:
First, I would like to take a moment to personally thank you for all that
you do in caring for one of your communities' most important assets - their
urban trees.
I am excited to announce a new effort from Trees Virginia to assist you,
our Tree Steward groups, in addressing your financial needs for the caring
of urban and community trees in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Please find three documents that comprise our new Tree Steward Mini-Grant
Program application process. Our effort here is to equitably meet the
financial expectations of so many Tree Steward groups across the State.
This mini-grant effort will help us to help you in fulfilling your urban
forestry responsibilities to your respective communities. Please take a
moment to assess your goals for the coming year and then complete and
submit your Mini-Grant application before August 1, 2009.
Respectfully,
Jay Banks, President-Trees Virginia

The purpose of the Tree Steward program is to:
 | Increase public awareness of the intrinsic value and beauty of trees,
|
 | Learn and understand the needs of the community forest, |
 | Help in caring for each community's urban forest - especially young
trees |
 | Education other residents of the community about urban forestry and
|
 | Involve additional community members as volunteers in creating and
caring for community tree plantings. |
Each volunteer taking the Tree Steward training makes a commitment to
return a specific number of volunteer hours to their local Tree Steward
projects. Each community determines the number of hours, sets the standards
for volunteer work, and decides the Tree Steward project they will
undertake. Tree Steward volunteers are a positive force for change in their
communities.
The
Tree Steward program provides assistance to the local municipality and its
residents in maintaining health trees throughout the locality. Tree Stewards
may be involved in other aspects of the community forest involving soil,
water, and wildlife. All Tree Steward projects are tailored to meet the
needs of the community. Tree Stewards through a positive, collaborative
attitude towards projects and activities work to develop a cooperative
liaison between volunteers, homeowners and municipal agencies.
Being
a Tree Steward is a challenging, rewarding volunteer opportunity. Tree
Stewards create a support network for urban trees and are a valuable
resource to their community.
The Tree Stewards is a statewide program sponsored
by the Virginia Urban Forest Council. For additional
information on Tree Stewards Programs or on starting a program in your
community, contact Jacki Vawter, Tree Steward Coordinator for Trees
