Arlington County Board Chris Zimmerman will talk about Smart Growth and the Urban Forest, describing Arlington’s established policy of concentrating density along transportation corridors and the implications for tree canopy.
bulletA panel on Helping Residents Learn about Trees will discuss outreach and education measures to help homeowners appreciate the benefits of trees and learn how to plant and take care of their trees.
bulletAn urban forester who worked extensively on Virginia’s New Tree Conservation Legislation will explain how it can benefit Northern Virginia jurisdictions.
bulletA panel on Planting for the Future will discuss how landscape and planting plans can be shaped to increase the prospects that homeowners will choose to keep the trees planted in their yards by developers.

Speakers and panel members include senior parks staff members, urban foresters, an extension agent, a tree commissioner, a tree steward volunteer, a consulting arborist, a landscape architect, and a non-profit organization that works with large numbers of volunteers to grow and plant native species of trees.   

The Roundtable will be held at the Arlington Parks and Natural Resources Operations Building, 2700 South Taylor Street, Arlington (see directions below). Parking spaces will be available in a lot behind the building. This site is not accessible by Metro, but there is bus service to nearby Shirlington.

When you RSVP, please let us know if you would prefer a vegetarian lunch. Thanks to Trees Virginia for paying part of the cost to keep lunch affordable for all attendees.

FROM I - 395

Take the Shirlington Exit (between the Route 7 and Glebe Road exit). 

 

From I-395 north, follow signs for Shirlington.  At the stoplight, go straight; this puts you on Arlington Mill Drive.
From I-395 south, follow signs for Shirlington.  At the stoplight, turn left; this puts you on Arlington Mill Drive.

 

Proceed ¼ mile on Arlington Mill Drive.  Turn left onto South Taylor Street, the building will be on your right.  Please do not park in the concrete lot in front of the building (for County vehicles).  Park in the asphalt lot on the right (after passing the building).  Enter the doors under the green canopy marked “Conference Center” and take the stairs or elevator to the second floor conference room.

FROM GLEBE ROAD

Coming from the Ballston area  - continue on Glebe Road.  After crossing Columbia Pike, go 2-3 blocks to Glebe/Walter Reed Drive intersection.  Turn right on Walter Reed Drive.  Cross over Four Mile Run Dr..  After crossing the bridge turn left at traffic light onto Arlington Mill Drive.  Proceed ¼ mile, turn right onto South Taylor Street, the building will be on your right.  Please do not park in the concrete lot in front of the building (for County vehicles).  Park in the asphalt lot on the right (after passing the building).  Enter the doors under the green canopy marked “Conference Center” and take the stairs or elevator to the second floor conference room.

FROM I-66 WEST

 Take Beltway Exit – 495 South (Richmond).  Proceed one mile, take Route 50 East (Arlington Blvd) exit.  Continue on Route 50 (Arlington Blvd).  Take Route 7 exit, turn right at traffic light onto Route 7.  Continue on Route 7 (pass Columbia Pike, Skyline Mall).  Turn left at traffic light onto Walter Reed Drive.  At third traffic light, turn right onto Arlington Mill Drive.  Proceed ¼ mile on Arlington Mill Drive, turn right onto South Taylor Street, the building will be on your right.   Please do not park in the concrete lot in front of the building (for County vehicles).  Park in the asphalt lot on the right (after passing the building).  Enter the doors under the green canopy marked “Conference Center” and take the stairs or elevator to the second floor conference room.
