| Hugging Trees in the
New Millennium A new
Tree Steward group recently completed a 12-week training program
based on the Trees Virginia model. The group of 20 enthusiastic and
dedicated volunteers are eager to begin several projects in Albemarle County
and Charlottesville under the leadership of the local Virginia Cooperative
Extension office's Extension Agent, Peter Warren. For more information on
the Tree Steward Program,
Trees in the City In
cooperation with Trees Virginia, Bartlett Tree Experts and the
International Society of Arboriculture--Mid Atlantic Chapter, the
Virginia Cooperative Extension recently piloted an Urban Tree Workshop
Series held semi-concurrently in Leesburg and Charlottesville. The 3 day
series included topics related to tree maintenance, problems, solutions and
new innovations in the realm of Urban Forestry. The hands on, practical
nature of the program attracted a nearly 100 participants from a wide
variety of public and private sectors. Great job, guys!
Planting a Piece of History
The Lynchburg Tree Stewards and the
local Kiwanis Club planted four chestnut oaks in Riverside Park to replace a
tree planted in 1937 by the Kiwanis Club in honor of the then US senator
Carter Glass. The trees were propagated from a copse of trees at Gettysburg
where Virginia Confederate soldiers sought refuge following Pickett's last
charge and were a gift from the White House Millennium Council. All of the
fifty trees awarded to Lynchburg have been planted in different locations
throughout the city. |
