Arbor Day celebrated in Madison
Over 500 youth in grades K-3 participated in one of two Arbor Day
celebrations complete with poems, prose, posters and planting. A newly formed
committee comprised of volunteers from Virginia Cooperative Extension, Madison
County 4-H, Greenscapes Nursery & Garden Shoppe Inc., The Madison County Garden
Club and the Madison County Task Force for Sustainable Growth with cooperation
from Waverly Yowell Middle School and Madison County Primary School planned the
events. Madison Wood Preservers Inc provided special funding for the purchase of
an Arbor Day momento, for each child. Initiative and partial funding for
planting material and signs came from Trees Virginia.

Students prepared for the event by creating posters, practicing poetry and
identifying benefits trees provide. After much practice and preparation,
specially selected youth presented the program to their peers, teachers, parents
and various community members before planting the tree on their school grounds.
As a result of this initiative by Trees Virginia and a dedicated local committee
of caring person, two willow oaks will grow in stature and grace at these
centers of learning, making for a more suitable learning environment for
generations to come.
