Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards -CATS- Announces the Tree Steward Training Course 2009 February 24 – May 26, 2009 Information Session : January 27, 2009 ( optional) What is a Tree Steward? Tree Stewards are trained volunteers whose mission is to support rural and urban forests, to increase public awareness of the value and beauty of trees, to educate about trees and tree care, to partner with local government agencies and civic groups to improve and restore the tree canopy in the area. Class Topics: Value of Urban Forest; Forest Ecology; Tree Identification; Tree Biology; Tree Selection; Planting and Care; Roots and Soils; Tree Disorders and Diagnosis; Pruning; Invasives; Utility Lines; Riparian Buffers; Forest Corridors; Big and Remarkable Trees; Conifers; Tree and Wildlife Interactions. Some classes will have an outside component with demonstrations and hands-on participation .Class Presenters: Experts in all aspects of trees, tree care and urban forestry from both public and private sectors, donating their services for this Tree Steward course. The professional affiliations represented include: Virginia Department of Forestry, Virginia Tech University, Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, Blue Ridge Community College, Piedmont Virginia Community College, Tree Stewards from throughout Virginia, American Conifer Society. Class Details 14 Consecutive Tuesdays, 9 AM to 12:00 PM beginning on Feb. 24, at the VA Dept. of Forestry, 900 Natural Resources Drive, Fontaine Research Park in Charlottesville, Virginia.
